Department Mission Statements & Associated Student Learning Outcomes
Associated Students, SJSU
Mission Statement Our mission is to represent the students of San José State University and continually improve the quality of their educational opportunities & experiences.
Student Learning Outcomes As a result of development opportunities, training and work experience, Associated Students student employees will be able to:
- demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills;
- improve their time management skills;
- enhance their problem solving skills;
- develop planning and teamwork skills; and
- demonstrate their understanding of ensuring a safe work environment.
Career Center
Mission Statement The Career Center promotes professionalism by providing the tools to guide students in making career planning decisions. We satisfy the needs of the employment community and complement the academic curriculum. Our high-touch customer service approach motivates, educates, and empowers students by giving them access to: customized consulting services and programs, job and internship opportunities, and a network of industry professionals and alumni.
Student Learning Outcomes The Career Center provides SJSU students and alumni with numerous educational opportunities to support the development of their career goals and job search competencies. To meet this objective, the Career Center Team has developed learning outcomes in alignment with the delivery of its workshops and programs, drop in sessions, office hours and career counseling appointments. This supports the Career Center Team in its thrust to most effectively serve students and alumni while maintaining quality and relevant services via a systematic evaluation and quality assurance/improvement process. The following are the specific learning outcomes students will gain upon completion of a Center's educational opportunity.
After participation in Resume Preparation workshops, students will increase their expertise in preparing targeted resumes.
After participation in Job and Internship Search workshops, students will gain competency in delivering an effective One-Minute Commercial to an employer. After participation in Interview Workshops, students will demonstrate increased competency in answering behavioral questions asked by employers.
After participation in one of the Center's career counseling, drop-in or advisory office hours, students and alumni will:
- understand how to use the resources available to assist them in selecting a major;
- demonstrate increased levels of knowledge related to various job search strategies including resume preparation, self-promotion and communication skills, or interview capabilities;
- articulate greater awareness of effective job search techniques relevant to their specific career goals; and
- identify expanded awareness of career options and goals related to their interests.
Counseling Services
Mission Statement Taken from the mission Statement of Counseling and Psychological Services of the California State University (CSU) System "The primary purpose of Counseling and Psychological Services is to assist students with developmental issues, value formation, and the resolution of personal and academic problems which may impede the learning process. Overall, CSU counseling centers provide either directly, or through collaboration and referral, a variety of counseling services (e.g., individual and group counseling, career development, crisis intervention, short-term psychotherapy), and testing and evaluation, faculty and staff consultation, and professional training/supervision consistent with the educational mission of the university."
Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will learn to know themselves.
- Students will learn to identify, understand, appreciate and use campus resources.
- Students will learn to understand themselves as integrated social and psychological entities who are able to formulate strategies for life long personal development.
Disability Resource Center
Mission Statement The Disability Resource Center, through collaboration with the campus and community, is committed to providing comprehensive services in support of the educational development and success of students with disabilities in a student-centered and professional environment. Recognizing the role of the campus in fostering educational access, the Disabled Employees Assistance Program provides reasonable accommodation to employees with disabilities.
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of a semester, students registered with the Disability Resource Center will be able to:
identify their specific disability and functional limitations resulting from the disability;
demonstrate the ability to determine and state their accommodation needs; and
describe the process involved in requesting disability accommodation for curriculum requirements.
Student Conduct & Ethical Development, Office of
Mission Statement The Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development is part of the Division of Student Affairs. Our role is to administer the Student Conduct Code and the Student Organization Code of Conduct in a manner that is consistent with our core values of fairness, honesty and integrity. We are committed to the ethical development of our students while balancing the interests of our community at large.
Student Learning Outcomes As a result of meeting with the Chief Judicial Affairs Officer, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the SJSU judicial process;
- demonstrate an understanding of the SJSU Student Conduct Code; and
- demonstrate an understanding of how their actions affect their student status and the campus community.
MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center
Mission Statement MOSAIC's mission is to provide support services and educational opportunities for students, and prepare innovative, socially-just leaders for our global community. We are also dedicated to enhancing and advocating for the academic and cultural empowerment of historically under-represented students. MOSAIC shall be a vehicle for promoting an environment that fosters intellectual exchange, civility, and the responsible exercise of individual expression. MOSAIC is dedicated to building a university environment that is truly inclusive by valuing the rich diversity of our campus community.
Student Learning Outcomes As a result of serving as diversity interns in the MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center, student interns will demonstrate:
advanced leadership skills;
effective communication skills;
identity development and empowerment; and
appreciation for cultural diversity and global perspectives.
Ombudsman
Mission Statement The University Ombudsman is an impartial party appointed to receive complaints, provide information, facilitate communication, and offer conflict resolution between students and members of the university community (faculty, staff and administrators). The Ombudsman does not take sides in a dispute.
Student Learning Outcomes As a result of meeting with the University Ombudsman, students will demonstrate an understanding of:
- the process by which SJSU addresses student grievances; and
- what their next step is to resolve their specific concern.
Health Center
Mission Statement Our mission is to promote and maintain a state of optimum health among the diverse student community in support of academic excellence.
Student Learning Outcomes The Student Health Center strives to promote accountability and responsibility for the health and well being of the student community. As a result of participation in peer health education programs:
students will be informed about relevant health issues;
students will be able to describe how a particular health issue can affect him/her; and
students will be able to describe how to prevent health consequences and promote health.
Student Involvement
Mission Statement To engage students in learning and personal development by fostering connections within our diverse university community, promoting campus citizenship, and preparing students for current and future leadership roles.
Student Learning Outcomes As a result of participating in Student Involvement programs, students will:
- speak, listen and write to achieve intended and meaningful understanding;
- use knowledge of evidence and context in order to reach conclusions and reason, as well as to innovate in imaginative ways;
- acquire core leadership skills, enabling them to lead productive and meaningfull lives within the SJSU and global community;
- advance their understanding and sense of self and live healthier lives in order to be successful at SJSU and beyond;
- cultivate their understanding and duty to be socially responsible and global citizens;
- be responcible to SJSU for becoming a campus citizen and seeking out ways to become academically and socially integrated into the community. Demontrating this resonsibility will lead to an increased institutional commitment.

Student Union, Inc
Mission Statement The Student Union Corporation offers quality services and programs that promote social, recreational, cultural and educational development. The Student Union Corporation of San José State University is committed to operating a financially responsible business, facilitating and enhancing the learning experience of a diverse campus and community. The Student Union Corporation invests in the well-being of San José State University students to be socially responsible leaders and productive individuals who meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.
Student Learning Outcomes The Student Union, Inc. recognizes students can learn from non-academic settings. The corporation management will encourage life-long learning through individual, group, and work experiences made available to the student employees to enhance and cultivate their skills for learning. As a result of individual, group and work experiences, student employees of the Student Union, Inc. will:
develop an understanding and appreciation of human differences;
develop leadership and professional skills;
develop judgment skills; and
develop well-being, balance, and a healthy lifestyle.
University Housing Services
Mission Statement As an integral part of San José State University and the Division of Student Affairs, the mission of the University Housing Services is to provide supportive and affordable residential learning communities that promote academic success and individual development. To this end, housing programs and services are centered on three simple ideas: to provide our residents with community, convenience and value.
Student Learning Outcomes As a result of living on campus and participating in Residential Life programs, students will:
- increase their knowledge of campus and community resources;
- develop their multicultural competencies and cultural sensitivity;
- clarify their values and develop a stronger sense of identity;
- improve their verbal communication skills; and
- increase their level of civic engagement and understanding of social responsibility.
As a result of participating in the FROSH start program, students will demonstrate an understanding of:
- SJSU campus resources and the San Jose community;
- time management strategies and how to achieve a balance between school, work and leisure;
- Career Center services and how to locate part time jobs;
- multicultural competencies and cultural sensitivity; and
- how to locate their classes and buy books.
