At San Jose State University, cognizant of the diversity that exists not only in population but also in educational opportunities, I took it upon myself to endeavor new ideas, and expand my knowledge through a variety of experiences. As a Political Science major, I have taken courses to obtain the knowledge necessary to create change. Change has become not only inspiration but also an objective.

As an intern for a member of the California State Assembly, I attend the Robert M. Hertzberg Capital Institute where I completed courses on Field Representative, Budget Process, Bill Tracking, Legislative Process and Constituent Case work. These courses allowed me to expand my knowledge on how bills progress from their creation until their chaptering. Working in coordination with various organizations to assure that policies are communicated properly, has become a strong hold that I have acquired through experience.

As the Director of Internal Affairs, I will advocate for the rights of students and the legitimacy of proposed policies. I, Maricela L. Contreras, am determined to become the link between the government and the students of San Jose State University.
