CHAPTER EXPANSION

The core document of the fraternity and sorority community is the , adopted on June 8, 2005. This document details the expectations of the fraternity and sorority community, SJSU, and the surrounding campus community. It lays the foundation for self-governance, while outlining accountability to the University and broader San José community.

"Each social fraternity and sorority shall belong to the appropriate governing/coordinating council. General interest groups affiliated with National Interfraternity Council (NIC) and Fraternal Leadership Association (FLA) will belong to the Interfraternity Council, general interest sororities affiliated with National Panhellenic Council (NPC) will belong to the Panhellenic Council, cultural-interest organizations shall belong to the United Sorority and Fraternity Council (USFC), and historically African American organizations associated with National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) shall belong to the NPHC at San José State University."

"Expansion should be undertaken when adding an additional social fraternity or sorority would strengthen the Greek community and benefit the University. The Greek coordinating councils in consultation with the University set policies and procedures regarding expansion. When a decision to pursue expansion is made, invitations to participate in the expansion process will be extended jointly by the Vice President for Student Affairs and the appropriate coordinating council. On behalf of the University, only the Vice President for Student Affairs may extend invitations to colonize a chapter at SJSU."

The previous paragraph lays the foundation for each governing council to determine its expansion policies. Further, the practice of such policies dictates that each council shall determine whether it will open for expansion. Usually, this openness to expansion is predicated upon council resources and the stability of member chapters.
