Governing councils

There are many different types of Greek experiences to choose from, all with something valuable and unique to offer. SJSU's Greek system is made up of 35 fraternities and sororities, and four governing councils. These councils coordinate events and activities within their respective communities.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) Fraternities

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) governs our national general interest fraternities, which are members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). There are ten (9 chapters + 1 colony) IFC fraternities at SJSU. Most of the IFC fraternities maintain chapter homes in the surrounding community. There may be opportunities to live in the chapter house once you become a member. IFC fraternities conduct major recruitment periods (rush) at the beginning of each semester. You can meet IFC members at the fraternity tables, forums, house tours, and joint events in the first few days of each semester. For about a week after that, the chapters hold individual events that allow interested students to get to know the members and the organization.

The member chapters of IFC are as follows:
Beta Theta Pi
Delta Sigma Phi (colony)
Delta Upsilon
Kappa Sigma
Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE)
Sigma Alpha Epsilon
Sigma Chi
Sigma Nu
Sigma Pi
Theta Chi

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Fraternities and Sororities

This council is composed of fraternities and sororities, which are members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). NPHC chapters conduct their membership selection or "membership intake process" independently and at different times throughout the year. One group has housing options for their members. You can meet members of NPHC chapters throughout campus, and the chapters generally have information tables during the first weeks of school. Look for flyers and advertisements that invite interested students to information sessions and other intake activities.

The six member chapters of NPHC are as follows:
Alpha Phi Alpha (fraternity)
Delta Sigma Theta (sorority)
Sigma Gamma Rho (sorority)
Iota Phi Theta (fraternity)
Kappa Alpha Psi (fraternity)
Phi Beta Sigma (fraternity)

Panhellenic Council (PHC) Sororities

The Panhellenic Council governs the five national general interest sororities at SJSU, which are members of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). All of the Panhellenic sororities maintain chapter houses surrounding campus, which offer members a group living alternative. You can meet Panhellenic members at the sorority tables, barbeques, and joint events during the first week of the fall semester. These organizations conduct one "formal rush" per year, just after classes begin in the fall. "Formal Rush," or Fall Recruitment, is a process where you have the opportunity to "rush" (consider membership in) all Panhellenic sororities. Thereafter, chapters with membership spaces remaining continue to accept new members throughout the academic year.

For more information on recruitment, please visit the San José State Panhellenic Council's website

The five member chapters of the PHC are as follows:
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Phi
Delta Gamma
Delta Zeta
Kappa Delta

United Sorority and Fraternity Council (USFC) Fraternities and Sororities

USFC chapters are local, regional, or national and are generally organized around a particular cultural awareness or interest. The recruitment process for these groups is decentralized, meaning that each individual chapter decides the time of year that they would like to induct new members. While most groups recruit in the fall, not all groups do. You can meet members throughout campus, and the chapters generally have information tables during the first weeks of school. You can also look for the United Sorority and Fraternity Council (USFC) table to find out information about all of the groups. Look for flyers and advertisements that invite interested students to information sessions and other intake activities.

The fourteen USFC chapters are as follows:
alpha Kappa Delta Phi (sorority - Asian American interest)
Alpha Kappa Omega (fraternity - Filipino interest)
Gamma Zeta Alpha (fraternity - Latino interest)
Lambda Sigma Gamma (sorority - Multicultural interest)
Lambda Theta Alpha (sorority - Latina interest)
Lambda Theta Phi (fraternity - Multicultural interest)
Nu Alpha Kappa (fraternity - Latino interest)
Sigma Alpha Zeta (sorority - Multicultural interest)
Sigma Delta Alpha (fraternity - Latino interest)
Sigma Lambda Beta (fraternity - Multicultural interest)
Sigma Omega Phi (sorority - Multicultural interest)
Sigma Omicron Pi (sorority - Asian American interest)
Sigma Theta Psi (sorority - Multicultural interest)
Zeta Chi Epsilon (fraternity - Multicultural interest)
