Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the Disability Resource Center (DRC) at 408-924-6000 (Voice) or 408-924-5990 (TTY) to schedule an academic advising appointment. DRC's academic advising program reflects the University's advising practices; however, DRC's Academic Advising Coordinator also considers disability-related factors when making course scheduling and selection recommendations.

It is preferable to meet with the DRC's Academic Advisor prior to attending your specific Orientation Session. For more information about the DRC or to learn about DRC's student registration process, visit www.drc.sjsu.edu

Placement Exam Accommodations

FAQs: Important information regarding the English Placement Test (EPT) and Elementary Level Math Exam (ELM) for Students with Disabilities

  1. Q: I need to take the EPT and ELM with accommodations due to my disability. How do I request test accommodations? When do I need to request accommodations?

Students who require accommodations for the EPT and/or ELM examinations must submit the appropriate documentation to the Disability Resource Center (DRC) and schedule to meet with a DRC counselor to determine eligibility and recommended test accommodations at least one month prior to the EPT and ELM test date. (EPT and ELM registration deadlines are available at https://testing.sjsu.edu). Contact the DRC at 408-924-6000 to schedule an appointment.

  2. Q: What if I missed the EPT/ELM Accommodation Deadline?

Students who wish to request EPT and/or ELM accommodations yet have missed the deadline to request accommodations are invited to contact the Accommodations Coordinator at 408-924-5942 to discuss available options. Student request will be determined on a case-by-case basis and space availability.

  3. Q: What is appropriate disability documentation?

It is important to note that the DRC does not accept 504 plans or IEPs as formal disability documentation at the postsecondary level. However, should a 504 plan or IEP comprise your only current documentation, the DRC will consider such documentation on a case-by-case basis. Information about what constitutes appropriate disability documentation within the postsecondary setting is available on DRC's web site at www.drc.sjsu.edu. Once there, access the "Student Services" link, and then the "Documentation Section" link. Forms to be completed by your medical professional are available on DRC's web site as well; on the home page beneath the "Quick links" heading, you can access the "Online Forms" link. Documentation can be delivered to the DRC the following ways:

    • Fax: 408-924-5999 (Submit the original at the time of your appointment, or shortly thereafter)
    • In person: The DRC is located in the Administration Building, room 110. (Keep a copy for yourself)
    • Mail: Disability Resource Center, San José State University, One Washington Square, San José, CA 95192-0168.

Once documentation has been delivered to the DRC, students are responsible for making an appointment with a DRC counselor to discuss the EPT and/or ELM accommodation.
