What happens at Frosh Orientation?
This mandatory day-and-a-half program exposes you to all that SJSU has to offer and will
- teach you about SJSU traditions
- introduce you to the many resources available on the SJSU campus
- welcome you to your new community and home
- help you be confident about your ability to graduate.
Knowledgeable Orientation Advisors will
- advise students about their classes, general education pre-requisites, and work load
- walk students through the class registration process and sign up for classes
- guide you and your family through educational experiences about campus programs and services
- assist you in making the transition to college.

Do I need to attend Frosh Orientation?
Yes, this program is mandatory for all incoming frosh. You must attend ONE of the nine Orientation sessions. Each session is a day-and-a-half program. If you do not attend ONE of these nine sessions, you will be blocked from registering for classes. We recommend attending an earlier session to ensure you receive the classes you want!

How do I sign-up for Orientation?
Registering for Orientation is an ONLINE process. Submit your Reservation Request by going to http://nextsteps.sjsu.edu.
You must also follow these steps to sign-up:
- Intent to Enroll
- Testing
- Student Registration
- Parent Orientation Registration and Payment.
Important Information: Please note that our sessions are now at capacity.
You will need your Student ID Number (9digits) and PIN (4 digit number that is the month/day of your birthday) in order to access the site.

How do I navigate the Next Steps website?
Once at http://nextsteps.sjsu.edu you must submit your Intent to Enroll and pay the Intent to Enroll fee.
Next, your ELM/EPT test scores must be on file at SJSU before you sign-up for Orientation.
ATTENTION: Allow six weeks between the time you take the ELM/EPT test and your preferred Orientation date.
You cannot attend Orientation if your scores are not on file.
If you are not sure about testing requirements, visit Testing and Evaluation at https://testing.sjsu.edu or contact them at testeval@email.sjsu.edu or (408) 924-5980.
After you have submitted your testing confirmation code you can register to attend Orientation. Make sure to follow these steps
1. Select your preferred Orientation Session date
2. Click Submit
3. Print two (2) copies of the Confirmation. Keep one copy for your records and bring one with you to orientation.

When will I receive a confirmation of my Orientation date?
Your registration confirmation will be automatically generated during the Next Steps process.

What is the fee to attend Orientation?
The Student Orientation fee is $135. The Parent Orientation fee is $80.00 per parent.
All students MUST attend the program; parents/guardians are highly encouraged to attend. The student fee will be posted to your student account and is not due until September. To register and pay for Parent Orientation, click on the Parent/Guardian Orientation option available at the Parent Orientation Payment site

- mandatory student lodging in the residence halls.
No portion of this fee is "optional" as students are required to participate in all aspects of the day-and-a-half program.

What happens at Parent Orientation?
This optional day-long program exposes you to all that SJSU has to offer and will
- teach you about SJSU traditions
- introduce you to the many resources available on the SJSU campus
- welcome you and your student to his/her new community and home
- help you be confident about your ability to support your student during their college years.
Knowledgeable University Faculty and Staff will
- guide you through educational experiences about campus programs and services
- provide you with an overview about students' classes, general education, and work load
- offer you many resources to aid you through your student's first year at SJSU
- assist you in preparing for the transitions you may encounter as a parent of a college student
- get you connected to other SJSU parents and receive tips from veteran college parents.
Parents/guardians are invited to stay through Day 1 of the program and can return on Day 2 to pick up their student.

What does the parent fee pay for?
The parent fee includes:
- all programming costs
- parking for the program
- meals.
No portion of this fee is "optional." Fees are non-refundable and must be paid upon registration for Parent Orientation.
Lodging for parents is NOT included in this fee.

What about lodging for parents/guardians?
Lodging for parents/guardians is NOT included in the Parent Orientation fee. Arrangements can be made to stay on campus in the residence halls. Limited housing is available. For more information on these accommodations please contact Summer Conference Housing at (408) 924-6180 or visit www.housing.sjsu.edu. Tell them you are attending SJSU's Orientation program.
Stay at a downtown hotel by contacting the San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau at 800-SAN-JOSE (726-5673).

Am I required to stay on campus during the entire Orientation program?
Yes. All components of the program are mandatory. If you leave the program at any time during Day 1 or Day 2, you will have a hold placed on your registration and will not be allowed to register for classes.
This policy also applies to the overnight component of the program. Students will be assigned to a room with another student attending Orientation. Students stay in gender-specific wings of the residence halls and have access to semi-private restrooms with showers. Orientation staff members will be staying in the hall with the students, and a member of the Professional staff will be present as well.
In addition, the safety of our students is of utmost importance, and requiring that students remain on campus helps us maintain a safe environment.

What should I bring to Orientation?
Students must bring the following login information to Orientation:
User ID and Password to log into MySJSU website
9-digit SJSU ID and 4-digit PIN to log into the Fee Payment websites
If you do not have the User ID, Password, SJSU ID or PIN, please request them by emailing the CMS Help Desk at cmshelp@sjsu.edu by providing your Name, Date of Birth & Mailing Address.
Your Orientation Confirmation
A personal file of your SJSU admission information including admission letters, grade reports, copies of transcripts from other colleges, placement test scores, financial aid forms, and everything else related to your enrollment.
The SJSU Catalog for descriptions of classes, major and minor requirements, available from the Spartan Bookstore, during your Orientation session. Contact the Spartan Bookstore at (408) 924-1805 or www.spartanshops.com.
Comfortable clothes and shoes. Be prepared for walking outside and variable weather.
Change of clothes and toiletries as needed. This is a mandatory overnight program. You will be on campus for two days. Linens will be provided. This includes: (1) pillow, (1) blanket, (1) set of sheets, (1) bath towel, and (1) wash cloth.

I still need to take the ELM and/or EPT. Can I sign-up for Orientation?
No. The CSU System requires all students be placed in first-year classes based on their SAT/ACT or ELM/EPT test scores. If we do not have your scores on file, you cannot be properly advised and cannot register for your classes. Therefore, you will lose your spot at Orientation if your scores are not on file with SJSU by the registration deadline for your Orientation session.

I missed the ELM and/or EPT test that I was registered for. What should I do?
If you miss the ELM/EPT registration deadline, you can attempt to walk-in and take the test on that day. Call Testing for more information at (408) 924-5980

I can't attend any of the Orientation Session dates. Are there any other options?
No. There are 9 Orientation Sessions that an incoming freshman can choose from.
All first time students have what is called an 'Orientation Hold' placed on their records. All students MUST attend Orientation to receive academic advising and have this registration hold lifted.

Can I bring a friend or significant other with me to Orientation?
Only parents and/or guardians are permitted to attend Orientation.
Parent/guardian sessions are planned specifically for their needs. Parents/Guardians cannot attend the student-only sessions, even if they choose to stay on campus through Summer Conference Housing.
