Health Education

Welcome to the SJSU Student Health Center Health Education website. We are pleased that you have chosen to inquire about our Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) education and counseling programs. The Department of Health Education has a diverse staff with various specialties to meet the health and wellness needs of SJSU students. We are here to serve you. Our goal is to prepare students to be knowledgeable, responsible, and accountable in developing healthy lifestyles and in taking responsibility for their own health.

Department Objectives:

  1. To assist students in learning about and appreciating the importance of health.
  2. To encourage students to accept responsibility for their own health in developing an awareness of the effects of lifestyles on health status.
  3. To provide students with guidelines useful in reducing health risks.

Meeting the above HPDP objectives is achieved by means of full-time staff and students through the provision of four categories of services as follows:

General Preventive Health Counseling/Education

Nutrition Program

Peer Health Education Program

SJSU Smoke-Free Policy Committee

Join the SJSU Smoke-Free Policy Committee and do your part in helping create a safe and healthy environment for all students on campus. Why?

  • Secondhand smoke exposure causes disease and premature death in children and adults who do not smoke. Secondhand smoke contains hundreds of chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic, including formaldehyde, benzene, vinyl chloride, arsenic ammonia and hydrogen cyanide.
  • Secondhand smoke causes approximately 3,400 lung cancer deaths and 22,700-69,600 heart disease deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year.

This is a student intiated committee. We are looking for students who are passionate about eliminating smoking on the SJSU campus and are willing to join us in working to achieve this goal. Our group meets the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month at 2pm. If you would like to join the committee, please contact peer health educator, Gina Vittori at healthylifesjsu@yahoo.com
